Delayed Opening/Emergency Closing

    The chief school administrator is authorized by the board of education to close schools, open them late or dismiss them early in hazardous weather or in other extraordinary circumstances which might endanger the health or safety of pupils or school employees.

    DELAYED OPENING
    In case of delayed openings, the following procedure shall be adhered to:

    Administrative staff reports at 8:30 AM.
    Secretarial staff reports at 8:30 AM.
    Teaching staff reports at 9:45 AM.
    Students report at 10:45 AM.
    The superintendent of schools begins the automatic dialing system and performs the necessary tasks to have the automated system dial and contact all appropriate faculty, staff, parents and persons on file to make known the school/district status.

    The superintendent's secretary notifies appropriate radio stations,
    Designated personnel will notify transportation providers, the police department and place notice on the district website,
    Building principals determine class schedules for the day. The schedule will include a lunch period of 30 minutes.


    THE PRE-SCHOOL DISABLED (AM) CLASS AT THE DESIGNATED SCHOOL IS CANCELLED. CANCELLATION DOES NOT INCLUDE THE PM SESSION OR THE FULL DAY SESSION.


    OTHER NOTIFICATION PROCEDURES - ALL SCHOOLS
    Local sirens (1 blasts at 6:45 AM & 7:15 AM for delayed opening)
    Radio stations (WOR / WCBS / WINS)

    Person to person notification by administrators may be utilized in conjunction with the automated dialing system when appropriate and as warranted by emergency conditions.


    EMERGENCY CLOSING

    In the case of an emergency closing, prior to the opening of school, the following procedures shall be adhered to:

    Once school is in session:
    In the case of an emergency closing occurring at some point during the school day, the following procedures shall be adhered to:

    Once the superintendent has made the decision to close schools the parent or emergency contact person shall be called advising the child's parent/guardian/emergency contact of the impending closing.
    In the event the parent or the parent's emergency contact cannot be reached, the child will not be dismissed.
